AGM 2013 News Letter

Work has continued slowly but surely over the twelve months since the last AGM. During that time we have fitted the exhaust system which took a couple of attempts as the original front pipe had been modified at some time, and was approx 1inch longer than the new one supplied by John Morter . Why this modification took place is anyone’s guess as the new silencer box and front pipe we sourced are the correct system for the engine model and type, we can only assume that the original leaked and had to be welded as a repair. The problem was overcome by turning the silencer bracket which allowed the whole thing to line up correctly. The new tyres have been fitted by 2U Tyres of Petersfield, which required the sourcing of seven new spring clips which we were able to get from John Morter who tells me they must be the last in the country and took a lot of searching in his yard to find. COH Baines supplied the window rubbers which enabled us to have the Windscreen, rear Window and the N/S & O/S rear quarter windows fitted by Addison Glass of Guildford. The boot lid has finally been fitted but requires some small adjustments to be made and the rubber seal fitted, again supplied by COH Baines. We now have gloss paint in the correct Ivory and Maroon which Roy was able to get mixed by HMG Coatings Ltd of Andover, and the boot lid has had a trial coat which we quickly did prior to the open day to show the colour match. Mud flaps have been fitted to the rear, a simple thing to do but gives some finality to that area of work being done. A new bottom runner for the passenger door has been sourced from B K Services, this is an item we will not be able to fit for some time to come, but we found the supplier whilst looking for other spares on the internet so ordered it while it was available.

We are in the process of fixing the flooring we cut last year into its final position. We are going to fit up to just short of the passenger door, as we still need access to the front quarter to fit the fuel pipe, heater pipes and main leads to the battery box which we hope to do this springtime. We have fitted the main floor fixing for the seats which consists of two long flat steal strips bolted through the floor into corresponding aluminium runners which are in turn bolted to the main chassis. This took some crawling about under the vehicle with a drill so that alignment could be made through the new floor and the whole lot could be bolted in place. This operation caused several ripe comments to be made by yours truly, accompanied by other unsympathetic comments from above. At writing we still have to fit a multitude of screws and securing bolts to the floor edges, but it is hoped this will be done by the time of the AGM.

We have taken the headlamp surrounds and sun blind securing rods to Silver Bronze who are based in Alton for re chroming. We intend to follow up with the front and rear bumpers which we have to take to Alton to assess the possibility of repair prior to being chromed, if that proves viable. If this is not the case then it will prove to be a major task to obtain replacements which I am not sure we will be able to do. I am told these are the same type as fitted to the Vauxhall Victor in the mid 1950s; I am currently following up on this information.

The open day was only marginally successful. However it led to a follow up article by David Dukes in the February edition of Bus & Coach Preservation magazine, and a further article by Elena Cresci in the local News & Mail. Interest on the day was shown in the DVD we now have for sale of the 1961 British Coach Rally.

The AGM has now been set for Sunday 7th April 2.30pm at Milland
